He trained teachers in Sunderland from 1962, taking early retirement in 1981. Since 1986 he has lived in Hexham. His publications include The Phoenix Park Murders: Conflict, Compromise and Tragedy in Ireland and Hexham Heritage. In 2001 he won the BBC Radio 4 title, ‘Brain of Britain.’
